Dr. Akash Chandawarkar, MD, is a Harvard-educated and Johns Hopkins-trained plastic and reconstructive surgeon. His journey began with undergraduate studies in neuroscience and nuclear engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He then continued his medical education at Harvard Medical School as one of few physician-scientists admitted to the joint Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences & Technology program.
During his time at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Chandawarkar worked closely with pioneering face and hand transplant patients at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, sparking his passion for plastic surgery. He graduated with cum laude honors in 2014. His postgraduate journey led him to the world-renowned Johns Hopkins/University of Maryland program, where he completed a seven-year integrated residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery.
Dr. Chandawarkar's quest for knowledge and skills in the field extended beyond traditional training. He dedicated time to learn aesthetic and cosmetic surgery around the U.S., including Beverly Hills, Laguna Beach, San Diego, and Dallas. Embracing innovation, he immersed himself for a full year in Silicon Valley's Stanford Biodesign Innovation Fellowship, focusing on medical device innovation and design thinking around unmet needs in medicine.
Returning to Johns Hopkins, he completed his residency in 2021. Dr. Chandawarkar is one of few plastic surgery residency graduates to undertake further aesthetic training after residency in an Aesthetic Society endorsed one-year fellowship. He moved to New York City to work with over 150 Upper East Side aesthetic surgeons at the Manhattan Eye, Ear & Throat Hospital (MEETH). The MEETH fellowship only accepts 2 fellows each year and is the most prestigious and historic training program for aesthetic surgeons in the world, with direct mentorship from many giants in the field of facial and rhinoplasty surgery.
Dr. Chandawarkar has published extensively in peer-reviewed plastic surgery journals and authored many textbook chapters,. He has written extensively for peer-reviewed journals and authored numerous textbook chapters, primarily focusing on technology and aesthetic market trends. His expertise has been recognized in the lay press, including the New York Times.
As a Next Generation Editor for the high-impact Aesthetic Surgery Journal, Dr. Chandawarkar plays a significant role in shaping the future of aesthetic surgery science. His collaboration with the Aesthetic Society on various international committees and his FDA testimony on breast implant safety highlight his commitment to the field. Given his unique engineering, innovation, and medical background, Dr. Chandawarkar is often asked to consult for new technologies in the aesthetic space. His research interests are diverse, encompassing injectable safety, artificial intelligence, and the intersection of digital media and aesthetics.
Originally from the northeastern U.S., Dr. Chandawarkar now resides in Tampa, Florida, with his wife, daughter, and two dogs.
